Eligibility

If you're post-high school and ready to work hard, KCP is for you.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS for KCp study

The KCP International Japanese Language School is open to all full-time undergraduate students regardless of their fields of study, to post-graduate students, and to adult professionals. The program is open to U.S. students and students from other countries that have a visa treaty with Japan.

Generally, to be accepted into the program:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You should be prepared to put in three to five hours of study each day outside of class.
  • You must have successfully completed high school.

Your grades in Japanese courses are weighed. Although there is no rigid Japanese language requirement, we strongly recommend at least one semester of Japanese, or sound knowledge of hiragana and katakana, before applying.

Students who get the most out of our program have completed at least one year of college Japanese. (Two or three years of high school Japanese equal one year of college Japanese). If you are not a native speaker of English, you must demonstrate your English ability.

For more on class levels, see language levels offered at KCP.

High school graduates and gap year students

This program is open to recent high school graduates wanting an immersive college level Japanese language program during the summer before their college entrance, or a gap year abroad. Students need to have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.50 on a 4 point scale (unweighted), and have or will have graduated high school before the KCP program start date. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age or older before beginning an application and have had previously studied the Japanese language.

Students with no previous japanese knowledge

Our program moves very quickly. We teach over a year of university level Japanese in one term. It is strongly recommended that students have at least one semester of formal Japanese classes before the program begins. At a minimum, students should familiarize themselves with some basic vocabulary and memorize the Japanese primary writing systems of hiragana and katakana before arriving in Japan. There are many resources for learning these writing systems. We offer some online learning options on our Kana page. This will give you a very good foundation in which to build your Japanese proficiency.

International Students Welcome

This program is also open to students and adults from other countries that have a visa treaty with Japan. If your country is on the list below, more than likely, we can accept your application. If your home country is not on the list, then we are unable to accept your application. All prices are in US dollars.

Testimonials

I selected this program because I saw a favorable review for it in my Japanese club’s newsletter, and I had been looking for a study abroad in Tokyo. I also liked how inexpensive the program was and how the offered dormitories, which few other programs did.
