Memorizing conversations greatly improved my Japanese speaking abilities.

Ashley from Summer Short-term 2024

Which events or activities did you find the most satisfying and why?

I loved the Yamanashi trip and Kotoba Day because I feel like I was able to learn through experience and push myself to become better at Japanese.

What were the most productive and interesting aspects of the program for you? The least interesting and productive?

I felt that living with other Female english-speaking students was extremely beneficial and allowed me to create connections and learn as a community.

What activities or materials did you find most helpful (e.g., pair work, drill practice, tests, small group sessions, textbooks, games)?

Memorizing conversations greatly improved my Japanese speaking abilities. I also really liked the voice acting section and would love more opportunities to do that as a class.

Any suggestions for improving class activities or materials?

If possible, I would love more opportunities to go outside the classroom for learning to practice everyday life skills.

Anything you especially liked in the living arrangements? Any problems you experienced?

I loved living with others in my program and especially liked my dorm as we were provided pastries every morning. The staff made it feel like home.

Any comments or tips for prospective/new KCP students?

Don’t be afraid to try new things, take advantage of opportunities, and do the best you can!

Testimonials

I’d say that the two weeks we got as Summer Short Term students before starting the actual Summer Term with the international students helped a lot. It prepared me for the intensity and structure of the program. I’d say the structure of the program and every day classes were very helpful in advancing my Japanese skills. Switching from some review and practice with my peers, to dictation, to kanji, etc, was engaging. I just think the intensity and structure of the program was ideal, at least for me.
